DEVIL’S DEN
The original inspiration for this painting was a scanned 35mm photographic print of an eroded sandstone formation. It began as a digitally painted piece using photoshop to enhance the faces and images suggested by pareidolia. This same technique is used in many of my works but in this case, as in Roots, it is applied to a single photograph. For years, I’d wanted to see this image in a different form than digital. I was trying to decide whether it should be rendered as a relief sculpture or a painting. I finally got around to recreating it as a painting. The digital version can also be seen in my digital art gallery. The title comes from the state park in Arkansas where the formation is located.
